It’s been a busy week! On Monday afternoon we left the hospital after 34 days of being inpatient! Yay! We also moved from a city apartment to a house closer to hospital so everyone is enjoying having some space and not being right in the city, which is clogged with tourists in August as all of Europe takes a holiday.
Aurelia had her bone marrow sample yesterday and we are thrilled that there was no evidence of disease. This result was expected based on her blood work, but it’s great to have the confirmation.
This great news does not change the course of treatment. Most kids with ALL are cancer free after 30 days and the next 1.5 years will be spent keeping the cancer from returning. Today we are back at the hospital to begin the next round of treatment, but we are outpatient now so we don’t have to spend the night.
Eston and Aurelia were finally reunited on Monday. Due to covid and oncology restrictions she could not have visitors at the hospital, so it was super emotional when Aurelia came back to the house. It took a few hours, but they have settled back in to things and all is well with typical sibling love and squabbles.
Our big goal now is to avoid infection. Aurelia’s immune system is pretty much non-existent, so she does not leave the house and we have air purifiers and a high amount of hygiene going on at home. No visitors allowed and we don’t go out in public much as covid numbers are increasing here and that could be disastrous for Aurelia.
We will be in Barcelona for the next month or so and hope to be able to go home to Girona for a bit after this phase of treatment concludes.
